The moment you need one, you need it immediately — and you need to know where it is. This is the case that makes that true: red enough to find in a dark footwell, sized to live where you'll actually reach for it. It's supplied empty, so you fill it with what you and yours actually use.

In everyday use

Most households already own the plasters, the tape and the antihistamines. What they don't own is one place to keep them, which is why the box under the sink and the glovebox and the bottom of the daypack each hold a third of what you need. This gives all of it one address. The smaller cases go in the car and stay there. The pouch drops into a daypack without taking a compartment. The backpack is the one that goes to the campsite or the trailhead with a group. All of them open flat so you can see everything at once instead of digging, and all of them are the same unmissable red so nobody has to ask where it is.

Depending on the style: padded shoulder straps, a webbing top handle, a rigid grab handle, a wrist loop, or a clip-on shoulder strap.

The EVA styles hold their shape in a pack or a trunk, which keeps what's inside from being crushed under everything else.

Why we chose it

Preparedness is mostly organization. Nobody is short of the actual supplies — they're short of a system, and a system starts with a container that has an obvious place and an obvious purpose. We chose an empty case rather than a pre-packed one because pre-packed kits are almost always wrong: too much of what you'll never use, none of what you actually need, and half of it out of date by the time it matters. Fill this once, check it at the start of each season, and it does its job without you thinking about it again.
