In everyday use

The cot opens out to a full 50 inches wide, which is a real double rather than two singles pushed together, and stands at 25.25 inches — bed height, so you sit on the edge to take your boots off. The air mattress goes on top and fills from the foot pump that comes with it, no batteries and no socket. Two pillows and their cases are in the bag. The sleeping bag zips up as one bag for one person, or opens flat into a blanket wide enough for two. When you're done, the frame folds to 39.25 by 8.75 inches and everything goes back into the same carry bag. Every part works on its own — the mattress on a tent floor, the cot bare, the bag as a blanket indoors.

Why we chose it

Camping sleep is normally assembled from four purchases made at four different times, and the result is a mat that doesn't fit the cot and a bag that doesn't fit either. We chose this set because it was designed as one object: the mattress is cut to the deck, the bag is cut to the mattress, and the straps hold the stack together when someone rolls over. Twenty-five inches of height is the detail that changes the trip — it puts the bed at the height of a bed, so getting up in the night is standing rather than climbing. It goes back into one bag, which is the only honest test of a set like this.

I bought this for a few weekends away and it's the first camping bed set where nothing feels like an afterthought. The cot opens out to 50" wide, so it's a proper double rather than two singles pushed together. Two adults fit without negotiating, and it's rated to 352 lbs. Assembly is required, but the frame is straightforward and the air mattress sits on the deck with straps that keep the whole stack from sliding when someone rolls over.

The height is what I didn't expect to like so much. At about 25" it's genuinely bed height, so you sit on the edge to pull your boots on and getting up in the night means standing rather than climbing out of a hole. The mattress inflates with the included foot pump, so there's no battery, socket or car adapter to worry about. It takes a few minutes of stomping, which is a fair trade.

The sleeping bag zips up for one person, or opens flat as a blanket that covers two, which suited us well. The two pillows and cases are in the bag too. It's 190T polyester, so it's a mild-weather set; for cold nights you'll want extra layers. Everything also works on its own: the mattress on a tent floor, the cot bare, the bag as a blanket at home.

Packing away is easy. The frame folds to about 39" × 9" and every piece goes back into the same carry bag. It's not light, so think car camping rather than carrying it far.
