Sleeping on the ground is the part of camping people stop being willing to do. This is the alternative: a folding bed six feet two long with a thick padded mattress on it, up off the cold, open in one movement.

In everyday use

It comes out of the bag as one piece and opens without tools or parts. The head end of the frame rises on its own, so the mattress banks into a pillow slope with nothing to inflate. At 27.95 inches wide it's a real single rather than a stretcher, and at 13.78 inches high you can sit on the edge of it and put both feet on the ground — useful in a tent, useful in a spare room. The mattress lifts off completely when it's warm, leaving the bare deck to move air underneath you, and goes back on when it isn't. It carries up to 500 lbs, and the whole thing weighs 18.17 lbs.

Mattress that comes off
The padded mattress detaches and rolls up on its own, so the same cot works through summer and winter.

500 lb capacity
The frame is rated to 500 lbs, so it holds two people sitting on the edge of it as readily as one sleeping.

25 mm elliptical legs
The legs are 25 mm elliptical pipe rather than round tube — the section that resists bending in the direction the load actually pushes.

Built-in head rise
The frame lifts at the head end, so the mattress slopes up into a pillow without a separate one.

Why we chose it

A camp cot usually asks you to accept that it's a compromise — thin fabric stretched over a frame, and a separate mat you carry to make it bearable. We chose this one because the mattress is a proper quilted pad and it detaches, which turns one object into two seasons. The 500 lb rating and the elliptical legs are the parts that matter after the first night: this is a frame you can sit on the edge of, get up from, and sit on again without the thing walking across the tent. It's also honest about what it is for. At six feet two and a foot high it makes an entirely reasonable spare bed indoors, which is where most camp cots spend eleven months of the year anyway.
