In everyday use

It starts as an upright armchair, 37 inches tall and narrow enough for a balcony. Lean back and it opens out to just over 60 inches, footrest up, backrest down to 24 inches off the ground. The whole thing turns a full circle on its base, so following the shade is a nudge of one heel rather than a two-handed drag across the paving. It works the same way indoors, which is where a lot of these end up by October. Assembly is required, and it ships as a single piece.

Why we chose it

Most outdoor recliners are lounger-shaped from the start — long, low, and awkward anywhere that isn't beside a pool. This one sits upright until you ask it not to, which means it works as a normal chair by a door or a fire table and still lies you flat when the afternoon goes that way. The swivel is the part we'd have added if it weren't there. Chasing shade is the single most common thing anyone does in a garden chair, and a base that turns saves you doing it by hand.
