Lunch runs long. The sun moves round, someone shifts their chair, and eventually the table gives up and everyone goes inside. This is the piece that keeps the table where it is — shade you can angle through the afternoon, and light in the same canopy once the afternoon is over.

In everyday use

Slide the pole into a base, turn the crank, and the canopy opens over the table at 8.8 by 6.7 feet — a rectangle rather than a circle, so it covers a rectangular table corner to corner. As the sun drops, press the button on the pole and the whole canopy tilts to meet it. The solar panel on the crown charges through the day and the LED strips along all eight ribs run for up to four hours after dark, switched from a rocker on the pole. It comes apart for storage, and the manufacturer asks that you close it in heavy rain.

Why we chose it

An umbrella is bought for one afternoon and judged on all the others. We chose this one for two decisions the supplier got right. The canopy is rectangular, which sounds like a detail until you watch a round umbrella leave half a table in the sun. And the light is built into the shade rather than added underneath it — no string lights to hang, no lantern to carry out, nothing to plug in. The wine red is a deliberate note against a gray table and a green garden; it reads as chosen. The base is bought separately, which is worth knowing before it arrives.

The colour is what sold me, and it looks even better in person. The wine-red canopy against a warm stone patio feels like a little courtyard in the south of Spain, and the rectangular shape covers a lounger or a small table far better than a round umbrella of the same size. At 8.8' by 6.7', I got real shade without the canopy swallowing the whole terrace.

The crank opens smoothly, and the push-button tilt let me follow the sun through the afternoon without wrestling the pole. The vented top is a thoughtful touch: on a warm day, it lets hot air escape instead of trapping it. Eight ribs keep the canopy taut, and the steel frame feels solid rather than toy-like.

The solar LEDs along the ribs are a lovely bonus. Flip the switch on the pole and you get a gentle glow for evening drinks. Be realistic about them, though: they run up to 4 hours on a charge, and the panel is small at 0.8 W, so they're mood lighting, not task lighting. They'll want a full day of sun to perform.

Two things to know before you buy. The base isn't included, so factor that into your budget, and you'll want a heavy one, since a rectangular canopy catches the wind. And it isn't a rain umbrella: the care notes say not to leave it open in heavy rain, so close it when the weather turns.

Handsome, practical shade with a charming glow after dark. Buy it for the colour, the coverage and the easy crank, and just budget for a good base.
