AVORA Outdoor Wall Lantern

You come up the path later than you meant to, arms full, and the door is already lit. A wall lantern is a small thing that changes the last thirty seconds of every evening — the part where you find the lock without putting anything down.

In everyday use

It mounts beside a door, a garage, or at the turn of a path, and once it's wired in there's nothing to think about again. The lantern is a clear glass box on all four sides, so the light goes out sideways as well as down and washes the wall above and below it. The socket takes a standard E26 bulb up to 100W — incandescent, LED or CFL — which means you set the brightness and the warmth yourself, and change it later if the porch feels too bright or not bright enough. The bulb isn't included, so choose one you'd be happy to look at: the glass hides nothing.

What sets it apart

Die-cast aluminum body
The frame, the scrolled arm and the wall plate are all cast aluminum, finished in black.

Clear glass on four sides
The panels are clear rather than frosted, so the bulb reads as a filament in a lantern instead of a glowing panel.

Standard E26 socket
It takes an ordinary screw-base bulb up to 100W, so the light is yours to choose and easy to replace.

Scrolled arm and round back plate
The arm curls out from a round plate and holds the lantern clear of the wall, which is what gives the fixture its shadow line.

Hardware in the box
Mounting plate, screws, decorative nuts and wire nuts all come with it. It's a hard-wired fixture, so it connects to an existing outlet box.

Why we chose it

A porch light is the piece of outdoor hardware you look at most and think about least. We chose this one because it holds a traditional coach-lantern shape without over-decorating it — one scroll, one pitched cap, four flat panes of glass, and everything in the same matte black so the fixture reads as an outline rather than an ornament. Clear glass was the deciding detail. It means the light in it is a bulb you picked, which is the difference between a doorway that looks lit and a doorway that looks like yours.
