The rain starts, the burgers are half done, and everyone else goes inside. A roof over the grill is the difference between calling it off and carrying on — and the rest of the year, it's shade over the hottest job in the garden.

In everyday use

It stands eight feet long and five deep, which is the shape of a grill and the person using it rather than the shape of a room. The canopy sits at 76.8 inches at the eave, high enough to work under without stooping and open on all four sides, so smoke and heat go where they should. A shelf runs down each side at counter height — 49 inches of mesh for plates, tongs, a drink and the things you'd otherwise be balancing on the grill lid. Ten hooks hang beneath them. Check your grill first: it takes one up to 70.9 inches wide and 39.4 deep.

What sets it apart

Two-tier vented canopy
A second roof floats above the first, so hot air rises out through the gap between them instead of collecting under the canvas.

Two full-length shelves
49.2 by 11.8 inches each, at 39 inches high, rated to 44 lbs apiece.

Ten hooks
Five under each shelf, rated to 4.4 lbs each, for tools, towels and utensils.

Why we chose it

A grill gazebo is one of those things people put off buying until the third washed-out weekend of the summer. We chose this one because it's honest about what it is: a roof, two shelves and ten hooks, in the footprint a grill actually needs. The two-tier canopy is doing real work — heat has somewhere to go — and the wood-effect posts mean it reads as part of the garden rather than as equipment parked in it. Anchored properly it stays put through a normal season, and it makes the cook part of the party instead of the person standing in the rain.
