There's a particular way of sitting that only happens in a round chair — legs tucked up, book open, no intention of getting up. This is that chair, moved outside, with somewhere to put the coffee.

In everyday use

You sit down into it rather than onto it. The cushion is a single tufted pad, 39.4 inches across and nearly four inches thick, curving all the way up the back, so there's no frame edge anywhere you'd lean. When the sun comes round, you turn — the whole seat swivels on its base, which is the difference between moving the chair and just shifting your weight. The tray sits at cushion height on one side and takes a mug and a phone without you reaching for the floor. On uneven paving the adjustable feet take out the wobble. It works indoors too; nothing about it looks like patio furniture that wandered in.

Why we chose it

Papasan chairs have a reputation for being lovely for ten minutes and awkward for the rest of the afternoon — you can't reach anything, and once you're facing the wrong way you stay facing the wrong way. We chose this one because the swivel and the tray fix exactly those two problems, and because the woven base is genuinely good-looking from every angle rather than being something to hide behind a plant. At 46.5 inches wide it's a commitment to a corner of the patio. It earns it by being the seat everyone goes to.
