A whole winter of wood, in one line, off the ground, where you can see what you've got left. Not a thing you think about often — which is exactly what you want from it.
In everyday use
Twelve and a half feet of squared steel that gets bolted together once and then stays put along a wall, a fence or the side of a shed. It takes three-quarters of a cord, which for most households is the season in a single delivery. The stacking layer sits 5.5 inches clear of the ground and the frame is vented downward, so air moves through the base of the pile instead of sitting in it. Eight feet spread the load along the run rather than putting it all on four corners, and the base is widened where it meets the ground. The 600D Oxford cover goes over the top and drops as the stack goes down.

Why we chose it
The question with a rack this size is whether it stays straight once it's loaded. Eight legs and a widened base are the reason we chose this one over the lighter four-foot designs — at three-quarters of a cord you are asking a lot of the frame, and the load should be carried along the run rather than at the ends. The rest is quiet and sensible: clearance underneath, vents through the base, a cover that follows the stack down. Buy it once, build it once, and get on with the winter.
