Drop an umbrella pole through the center hole and it becomes the stand as well. The base is flared and hollow, sized to sit over a weight base smaller than 18.9 inches square, so the ballast is inside the table instead of parked on the ground beside it. We chose this one because it makes the stand disappear into a piece of furniture you'd want anyway — the weight goes inside the base, the pole goes through the middle, and what you see is a woven table with a shelf. The hourglass shape is doing structural work, not decorative work: it flares out exactly where it needs a wide footprint and pulls back in where you want knee room.
